Quick Facts about Hawai'i

Hawai'i is probably one of the most unique among states. It is the only state that was once a kingdom. By 1795, after unifying the island chiefdoms into the Kingdom of Hawai'i, it was ruled as a kingdom until 1893, when it was overthrown -- by US. It is the only state that has its own time zone. It is the only state made up entirely of islands: by some counts, there are thousands of islands, and by others, there are 132. New islands are still being made. Only eight are large enough to be well known: Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi, also known as the "Big Island" to distinguish it from the others. Hawai'i entered the Union on August 21, 1959, as the 50th state. Residents call themselves Hawaiians, Kamaaina (native-born nonethnic Hawaiians), or malihini (newcomers).
